Students spend spring break serving others
More than 60 students and employees from George Fox University spent their weeklong spring break helping others in three states during the university’s 18th annual Spring Serve.
During the week of March 21-28, students traveled to Yakima, Seattle, and Neah Bay in Washington, as well as Los Angeles and Utah to work on service projects in diverse cross-cultural settings.
Participating students were selected through an application process. They paid a portion of the costs of their trips, the rest of which is subsidized by the student government. Each of the trips had a faculty, staff or alumni leader, assisted by two undergraduate student leaders.
The following are brief descriptions of the five trips:
- Near Yakima, Wash., a group did physical labor and ministered to at-risk youth at the Flying H Ranch.
- In Utah, a group worked with Utah Partnerships for Christ to learn about the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints and interacted with its members in an often-forgotten area of ministry.
- In Los Angeles, a group served at the Dream Center, an organization that sponsors more than 200 outreaches in inner-city L.A., including work with kids in the projects, homeless ministry, and night life outreach, to name a few.
- In Seattle, a group served at several different ministries, including Urban Impact and New Horizons Ministries, and did everything from working at an after-school tutoring program to working with runaways and prostitutes.
- A group went to the Makah Indian Reservation in Neah Bay, Wash., where they worked to maintain and improve the environmental habitat, while also serving the community by painting a church, gardening, and performing various other tasks.
