Highly competitive national scholarships are available for outstanding students in all fields, particularly those considering graduate studies.

Applying for such scholarships is a lengthy and involved process. Students should plan ahead and start the process early on. (Two months before the deadline is not unreasonable.) Furthermore, many scholarships require campus nominations and thus earlier on-campus deadlines may also apply.

But long before that point, when already a freshman or sophomore, you should be preparing yourself:

• Commit yourself to your academics
  • Learn for the sake of learning
  • Develop specific fields of inquiry and research
  • Maintain a high GPA (usually 3.8 or better)
• Serve your community by providing leadership in school, city, volunteer organizations, government, etc.
• Pursue independent research (e.g. through a Richter grant)
• Develop relationships with professors

• The German Academic Exchange Service has a variety of fellowships and grants for undergraduate, graduate, and research studies in Germany.
• Deadline: Varies, see individual program(s).
• The Harvey Fellows Program provides funding for graduate study in order to encourage Christian students to integrate their faith and vocation and pursue leadership positions in strategic fields where Christians tend to be under-represented.
• Deadline: August 1 - November 1, each year
• The US-Ireland Alliance (Mitchell scholarships) sponsors competitive, national scholarships for graduate study by American citizens at institutions on the island of Ireland in any discipline.
• The Rhodes Scholarships fund study at Oxford University for entering graduate students in diverse fields.
• Marshall Scholarships finance young Americans pursuing any field of graduate studies in the United Kingdom.
• The Fulbright Program offers fellowships to U.S. students in various disciplines for graduate studies, research, and/or teaching assistantships abroad.
• The American Graduate Fellowships support students from small and mid-sized liberal arts colleges pursuing graduate studies in History, Philosophy, Literature, Languages, and the Fine Arts.
• The Jacob K. Javits Foundation provides fellowships for those seeking graduate studies in the arts, humanities, and social sciences.
• The Gates Cambridge Scholarships offers awards for graduate studies in various fields at Cambridge University.
• The Hertz Foundation provides fellowships for graduate work leading to doctoral degrees in the physical sciences.
• The National Science Foundation Graduate Research Fellowship provides three years of support for graduate study leading to research-based master’s or doctoral degrees and is intended for students who are at the early stages of their graduate study.
• Deadlines: various depending on program, but beginning November 1.
• The Paul and Daisy Soros Fellowships support new Americans in their pursuit of graduate studies in a variety of professions and disciplines.
• Davies-Jackson Scholarship is available to those students who are among the first in their families to graduate college, to participate in a course of study at St. John's College at the University of Cambridge.
• The Truman Foundation supports graduate studies and focuses on college juniors who show exceptional leadership and are committed to work in government, public service, or non-profit organizations.
• The Ford Foundation, through its program of Diversity Fellowships, provides predoctoral fellowships for graduate study for ethnic minorities committed to a career in teaching and research at the college and university level and interested in advancing diversity. The fellowships will be administered by the National Research Council.
• The National Security Education Program David L. Boren Graduate Fellowships encourage U.S. graduate students to add an important language component to their educations.
• The Goldwater Foundation fellowships support outstanding undergraduate students in the sciences, mathematics, and engineering who plan on a research career. Students must be nominated by George Fox University. For internal application guidelines, please contact Paul Otto.
• The Consortium for Graduate Study in Management provides fellowships for graduate study in business with the purpose of increasing the enrollment of ethnic minorities and those supporting the mission of consortium
• The National Security Program/David L. Boren Undergraduate Scholarships provide funding for international study (in most disciplines) in regions critical to U.S. interests. After graduation, awardees are expected to work at least one year for a U.S. security agency.
• The National Flagship Language Program offers advanced language training in Arabic, Korean, Mandarin, Persian, or Russian.
• The Jack Kent Cooke Foundation provides fellowships to seniors or recent graduates with financial need and academic excellence who are entering graduate studies in a variety of fields. • The Udall Foundation offers fellowships for undergraduates seeking to be future leaders in areas of the environment, or Native Americans concerned with health and tribal policy. Students must be nominated by George Fox University.
• The James Madison Foundation offers fellowships to graduate students with an interest in the American Constitution and a goal of teaching American history, American government, or social studies in grades 7-12.
• Deadline: March 1, each year
• The Rotary Foundation provides several scholarships, particularly for international study such as the Ambassadorial Scholarships.
• Deadlines vary according to local chapter, but are usually in the spring.
